1 My Reflection on the one-way communication: 1. Brochure: As I have mentioned in the interview analysis, I had interviewed a family that come from another country and speak language other than English. They also have a daughter who has autism. The mother informed me that it was very difficult for her to understand the disorder since she was not familiar with this topic. Since the mother speaks Burmese, I decided to communicate with her in Burmese rather than providing an interpreter. For this family, I created a brochure and a thank you letter both in Burmese and English. From the interview, I learned that the mother was struggling to do research more about the disorder due to the language barrier. So, I decided to create a brochure providing an online and local resources that would be beneficial for the family. I think that this kind of one-way communication is both effective and benefit for the family. This brochure is very simple, but I believe that it will be useful for the family especially the mother since she is the one who take care of her children the most. I decided to type the brochure up in both Burmese and English so that she will be able to follow the instruction I had provided. I feel that this type of communication is simple and will help the family since I was able to put all the resources together. I am positive that she had received many supports from the Bowen Center regarding on the Autism. However, she does not have anything translated in her language, so it is still difficult for her to process the information. I really believe that she will get some help from my brochure and she will be able to keep it with her for future references. 2. Thank you letter: I also created a thank you letter for all three families and one translated in Burmese for one of the family. A thank you letter is very simple to write, but it shows great appreciation when you send to the family. This will show them that I appreciated their time and enjoy learning about their experiences. It may be simple, but the family will know that I truly care about their situation and willing to take my time and listen, so that they don’t feel like they wasted their time answering all my questions. The family has been very patience answering all my questions and I believe that they deserve more than a thank you letter. I send the thank you letter because I want them to feel like they are being cared for and their answers are worth. Phone conversation: One of the mothers that I interviewed is my coworker at the YMCA. I work with her daughter for the youth program. This conversation took place on March 11. The mother is very flexible, and she mentioned that she rather text than emailing. She also informed that she always texts her children’s teachers to check up on anything. We communicate through text before. So, for this conversation, I decided to send her a text message for the effort and the good work her daughter puts in. Me: Hello _____. This is F______ again. How was your day? How’s your family doing? I wanted to update you on your daughter progress on the music project. Are you available to text? C: “Hello F_____. My family’s doing great. Thank you for asking. It’s been a long day. How are you?” Me: I am glad to hear that your family is doing great. I am also doing good. So, the teenagers are working on a song call “What is Peace.” They all take different parts and wrote the lyrics on their own. As you know D______ has been really shy. We finally got her to sing. We had a chance to record their music and it turned out pretty good. All the kids work hard on this. Your daughter puts a great effort and sing very well. I would like to invite you to stop by the studio so that you can listen her part. 2 C: “Omg. D_____ sing? It’s very hard to get her to do something. I know she was working on the lyrics at home and try to sing but I wasn’t sure it was for the music project they did like last year. Yes. I want to listen. When can I stop by the studio?” Me: Yes. D____ is very shy. But she did pretty good on her part. They did something like this last year and we are also going to make a video with them probably in April for this song. I am happy that you are coming. You can stop by the studio any time tomorrow after 4pm. C: “I can’t wait to listen. I will be there then. Thank you for letting me know.” Me: You are very welcome. I will see you then. Email conversation: I created the brochure after this email conversation with the family. Me: Hello. This is F_______. How are you? I hope your family is doing great. I have a few more questions about your family. I am wondering if you will be able to answer them. During the interview; you mentioned that you have been struggling to use internet to learn more about the Autism Disorder. Have you asked the Bowen center to show you on how to research and where to get help from? R: “Hello. My family is doing good. I got a lot of help from the Bowen Center and they been very useful. But I do not have anything in Burmese or where to go from. I did not ask them because I don’t think that they have anything in Burmese. They only provide an interpreter when they come in.” Me: Thank you for explaining. I am glad to hear that Bowen Center has been a great help! I am positive that they are willing to provide you anything you need regarding on the issues. I want to put some information together for you regarding on the disorder and some resources that you can use. I think that it will help you a lot. I would like to create a brochure and send them to you if you are okay with it? R: “It would be very useful. I appreciated your help and I would like you to give it to me. It will be very nice since I can read Burmese. Thank you.” Me: You are very welcome. I will give it to you once I am done putting all the information together. R: “Thank you.” 3 My Reflection on two-way communication 1. Texting Conversation: This method of communication is very easy and simple. I believe that texting is becoming more and more trending and most people prefer to use texting as a way to communicate with teachers or even in business setting. According to Grant & Ray, the book stated that parent who receive information about field trip, activities, or events through text are more likely to be involve and it also increase parents’ engagement with their children. (p.314.). Ms. C is has a tight schedule and she does not check her email regularly and that’s why she prefer texting. She mentioned that texting is easy for her and she can reply to it anytime. I also like texting as well and the conversation was very smooth though, I try to keep it professional and provided the information I needed to. The mother was very happy and excited that her daughter was putting effort on something good. 2. Email conversation with Burmese Family This method was very helpful for this family since I was able to communicate with them in Burmese. The mother was very happy that I was going to put some resources for her to use in Burmese. I am very grateful to speak more than one language and I believe that it will be very beneficial for me when I work with the children in the future since we have a huge population of Burmese in FT. W. I have emailed the mother in Burmese, so she can understand, then I translated to English so that you are able to read our conversation. I provided the conversation both in Burmese and English. I am hoping to have another conversation with her to see if there is anything else I can do to help, and I am willing to provide her any information she needs in Burmese. I feel that translating all the information in Burmese is very little and easy, but it brings a huge help to the family. It makes me happy that I did something good to help the family without wanting anything in return.
