Please respond with a paragraph to the following post, add citations and references:

Imagine that a family friend or colleague has just been diagnosed with cancer. Explain how the American Cancer Society might provide education and support. What ACS services would you recommend and why?

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is a nationwide community based voluntary organization that is dedicated to eliminating cancer. In the meantime, the ACS provides funding, research, shares expert research, supports patients, and spreads the word about prevention (“Mark Your Bottom,” n.d.). The American Cancer Society helps the patient and their family understand their diagnosis, manage their lives through treatments and recoveries, and side effects. They provide support by helping patients find the right health care team, insurance, and provide help with finances, and provide emotional support to the patient, family and caregivers.

Being newly diagnosed with cancer can be very devastating and scary to the patient and their loved ones. Surely one of the first questions that would come to mind would be, “I am going to die?” Therefore, the ACS service I would initially recommend would be education. Having answers to questions can help feel more in control and less worried about what is going to happen next. The ACS can answer questions from “what is cancer?” to making treatment decisions, to “how do I talk to people about having cancer?” to “how will I pay for all of this?” (Mark Your Bottom, “ n.d.).
