The American Cancer Society has many resources in order to provide not only the patient, but the patient’s loved ones with support and resources for their cancer diagnosis. Two of the main resources that the ACS provides that I would recommend is their educational services and financial resources. Having a cancer diagnosis can be less intimidating if one understands their diagnosis. How cancer works, what kind of cancer it is, the prognosis of the treatment, can all help to alleviate some stress. Also knowing how to pay for treatment can also help alleviate stress and the patient can focus on healing and beating the disease.

Factors that can contribute to the yearly incidence and mortality rate of various cancers can be so many different things. Our food alone in the Unites States is very processed and chemically enhanced. The use of hormones and chemicals to make our meat, fruits, and vegetables bigger really can contribute to the incidence of cancer. Other factors can be our everyday health practices, or lack of. Obesity, sedentary lifestyles, smoking, drinking alcohol, and recreational drug use can all increase the risk of cancer. The rise in poverty and little access to health care for routine health maintenance can also increase the mortality rate due to lack of education and resources to seek treatment. Providing better health care access and education on health maintenance and routine screenings by way of health fairs can help to lower the incidence of cancer in the United States.

The American Cancer Society works with many programs to research different types of cancers. One of those programs is St. Baldrick’s Foundation. St. Baldrick’s is known for raising money by supporting children who have lost their hair due to cancer treatment. People will donate money and shave their heads in their support and some will even donate their hair to make wigs for young children with cancer. This foundation works with other organizations to work towards research for childhood cancers. “Worldwide, a child is diagnosed every 2 minutes” (About Childhood Cancer, n.d.). Working towards finding a cure for cancer will allow millions of children a better quality and prognosis of a long, fulfilling life.
