Reflect on the Times
Directions
SoHW is experiencing significant growth. Because of this, Greg Gears has asked you to do some basic
research into current organizational trends and models, especially those related to organizational change, which
might help SoHW navigate its own growth. Begin by exploring the Project resources, and choose five
organizational models or trends that you want to focus your research on. The goal of your research will be to
collect information for an Evaluation Document containing answers to the following research questions:
•
•
•
How do you define and explain the five models or trends you have chosen to research?
What are the potential challenges for organizations that choose to embrace each of these models or trends?
What opportunities might result in organizations that choose to embrace each of these models or trends?
In addition to researching the topic, you decide to talk to three different people who have long-term experience
working for an organization and ask about their personal experience with some of these models and trends.
Choose three people who have a lot of experience working with an organization, and ask them the following
discussion questions:
•
•
•
How have they seen the models or trends that you have chosen to research changing over the past 10 years? If
anyone you talk with is unfamiliar with these models and trends, you can start by explaining them.
How did the changes related to the models or trends impact the organization(s) where they have worked, and in
what ways? Ask for some specific examples.
Are there any other significant changes they have seen at their organizations over the years? Ask for a
description of the changes and their impact.
Include answers to the research questions and discussion questions in your Evaluation Document (500-1,000
words), the purpose of which is to provide Greg with a good general understanding of your five chosen
organizational models and trends, along with helpful real-life examples of their impact in organizations.

Assess the Complexities
Directions
In this Project, you will prepare for any possible complexities that may arise if you attempt to change
the model, or organizational structure, at SoHW. You understand that organizational change is never
simple, and structural changes must be well thought-out before they are implemented.
You were already aware that some of your employees, and those from other departments, had some
concerns that seem to have resulted from the organization's fast growth and poorly designed
organizational structure. To help you understand their concerns and perceptions toward change, you
administered an employee change questionnaire. Review the results of the questionnaire, located in
the Project resources. Then review the Project resources concerning the following complexities
involved in organizational change:
•
•
•
Forces for and against change
Resistance to change
Organizational politics
Use the results from the questionnaire to complete the "Complexities Assessment," located in the
Project resources. The purpose of this assessment is to help you prepare and plan before making
any changes to the organization, which will occur in the following Project.

Putting Organizational Complexity In Its Place
Read this article from McKinsey & Company, which concisely explains how one company identified
and resolved many complexities that existed in its organization. You will realize that this is similar to
the process you are being asked to follow in this Project

Directions
After considering all of the complexities associated with organizational change, you met with other managers
and unanimously agreed that making changes to the organizational structure of SoHW is vital for the
organization's continued success. In this Project, you will create a new organizational chart for SoHW and
write a memo to accompany it. To help you get started, review the current SoHW organizational chart
provided to you by Greg Gears, located on page 2 of the "Directions for Organizational Chart and Memo"
document in the Project resources.
Then review the Project resources regarding the following elements of organizational structure:
•
•
•
•
Centralization/decentralization
Formalization
Levels in the hierarchy
Type of departmentalization (functional, divisional or matrix)
Depending on the arrangement of the elements above, different types of structures can emerge. Review the
Project resources concerning these structure types:
•
•
Mechanistic
Organic
While you review the different types of structures and the elements that compose them, you may complete the
"Note-Taking Guide" in the skill-building resources. Note: This guide will not be turned in and is provided
only to help you focus your notes. Once you have reviewed all of the Project resources, choose a model that
you believe would be best to apply at SoHW and create an improved organizational structure chart that reflects
the elements that are best for SoHW. You will also need to write a memo that accompanies the organizational
chart that can be sent to the leadership team for review. Review the Project resource entitled "Organizational
Chart and Memo Directions" for more guidance on this portion of the Project.
