The Case: I Don't Want Or Need to Come....

The call was, at first, one like he had received literally hundreds of times. A mother, clearly concerned, opened the conversation with, "Dr. Alonzo, I was referred to you by the school counselor. My son, who is a senior, was just busted with marijuana and our family is in turmoil."

Dr. Alonzo provided support for the distraught mother and asked if she had discussed the possibility of coming in for family counseling with her son. Mrs. Gage responded by informing Dr. Alonzo that when they met with the counselor, it was she, her husband, and her only child, Michael. They discussed the situations regarding falling grades, his new group of friends, his verbalized disinterest in going to college, the current "drug bust," and the tension at home. He agreed to the idea of connecting with a family counselor.

Following this brief explanation, a time for the intake session was established. Thus went the initial contact.

Two days later and 4 days prior to the scheduled appointment, Dr. Alonzo received a phone call from Michael. After introducing himself and noting that he was 18 years old, Michael proceeded to say that he did not want to attend and that the only reason he even suggested agreement in the counselor's office was that his parents threatened to take his car away. He was calling to tell Dr. Alonzo, "I don't want to appear rude or waste your time, but I do not want to come, and if I do it is only because they are threatening me with the car." He ended the conversation with, "I don't want you to tell my parents that I called."

Needless to say, the phone call was both informative and challenging. Dr. Alonzo was confronted with numerous questions about how to proceed.
