Technology has taken over our society that it has become increasingly hard to understand
what qualifies as technology. However, according to the National Association for the Education
of Young Children refers to both digital and analog materials such as applications, streaming and
broadcast media, e-books, the internet, software programs among other forms of content that
have been developed to enhance active and creative use by the young (NAEYC, 2012). It,
therefore, encompasses the CDs, DVDs, computers, tools, monitors or other electronic devices.
Exposing children to the screen while the very tender ages of below two years are discouraged
by professional agencies like American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) with the only exception
being when it is done in shorter and intermittent periods with greater involvement of the parent
who actively engages the child as they watch the screen. Blocking them all together is impossible
considering that from time to time the parent may need to attend to other issues around the home
or needs a break and so prefer to keep the child busy during their brief engagements.
Many applications and programming have been marketed as educational and thus
beneficial to the child, but that is far from the truth. The present-day generation of children as
well teenagers are live in an environment where they are surrounded and immersed in a digital
environment (Chassiakos et al. 2016). The traditional media like TV, radio, or periodicals have
been replaced by new digital technologies that focus on more interactive as well social engaging
tools that allow teenagers and children have instant access to information, technology and media
among other devices (Chassiakos et al. 2016). Such media are a form where the users can
actively create as well as consume the content. The engagement with technology or screen time
like watching a TV program should be one that is beneficial or of an educational nature to

benefit the child. More emphasis should instead be given to real-life activities as well as human
contact and interaction. Technology negative affects the children's lives; it has changed their
growth and development and taken them away from the critical day to day activities, social
interactions, and active lifestyle negative impact on their mental, emotional, and physical health.
