Summary
Paolo Pedercini is a game developer and educator whose works have been exhibited in
many places around the world. He makes provocative games addressing social issues such as
religion, labor, sexuality, and environment. In the lecture, he discusses several issues about video
games and their place in contemporary society. Pedercini begins the lecture by exhibiting
“BooFlag,” a game where the player boos at the Confederates' flag for it to burn up. He then
gives a brief history of himself, and explains that he is originally from Italy but has been living in
the US for quite some time now.
He explains that in most of his games, he strives to strike a balance between ideology and
electronic entertainment. Silvio Berlusconi, one of Italy's former prime ministers, was a principal
reason why Pedercini started making games with a satirical dimension. Berlusconi had wielded
overwhelming media power, wealth, and populism to the extent it would be quite impossible to
change people’s brainwashed viewpoints about him. Pedercini started with memes, but he later
went on and specialized in games that challenged the political, economic, and social problems
that were prevalent during the early 2000s. In his games, he keeps on responding to current
