Cuba declaration of independence
Introduction
In the 19th century during the American- Spanish war, Cuba got freedom as Spain
withdrew from the island in 1898. This was after a series of rebellions by Cubans which never
worked as Spanish authorities were not moved by the rebellions. After this war, America took
over Spain for about three and a half years and formal independence was given to Cuba in 1902
(Pavey, 532). Most Cuban citizens were against the Spanish rule due to the sufferings that they
went through and this made them fly to Florida and other parts of The United States to seek
refuge. The fight for independence by Cubans led to the abolishment of slavery in the country as
Spain authorities enslaved people to work in the sugarcane plantations. After the declaration of
independence, Cubans occupied most public offices that were full of Spanish. There was
improved sanitation and Cubans could access education which they were denied by the Spanish
authorities. There was also eradication of the yellow fever disease which had greatly affected
Cubans for a long time.
The war of independence in Cuba began in 1895 to 1898 as they wanted to gain their
freedom from their colonialists, Spain. Spain believed that most of the inequity in Cuba was due
to the Cuba poor social systems and not the Spanish government. Therefore, Spain believed that

to remedy the problems affecting Cuba they had to transform the Cuban society. Commitment of
the armed separatists was more than just independence. The war of independence initially was
between the colonialist and metropolitans and later it took a broader perspective where it was
now a struggle between populist coalitions, Creole Bourgeoisie over competing claims of
