Selecting a network technology and identifying devices to be used, mostly requires an
understanding of what is expected in the particular connectivity. Initially there was need for
machines to communicate within specific short distances, (Cioffi, Tehrani, Rhee, Bhagavatula,
Chow, Kerpez, ,…& Yun, 2018). The local area connection was sufficient and the need for wide
area coverage was not appreciated. Later on there was need for wide area communication. The
development of the internet and later on the fiber optics connectivity led to the development of
technologies like the frame relay. Wide area network connectivity is characterized by dense
deployment of devices and gateways which are connected using multihop mesh of networking.
The most likely technology to be adopted was the wireless local area network which is challenged
by its cost, high power consumption and ability to only cover short distance. The development of
cellular technology also came up with further challenges that required connectivity that would
facilitate complexity to deal with sophisticated waveforms, optimized for voice, high speed data
services and text. Some of the parameters that are considered while choosing a network to use
include its ability to cover wide area, low power consumption and cost.
Also the connectivity should be such that it is able to communicate with other technologies.
