The movie Saint Judy is based on real-life events of Judy Woods, a lawyer who unlike
most in her field majored in fighting for the rights of immigrants while helping them acquire an
asylum. The film was written by Dmitry Portnoy who was moved by the story of Judy while
working for her as an intern especially because his family was granted an asylum when they
were immigrants during his childhood. This story looks into justice for the voiceless in the
society, and the place of women in a male-dominated society for instance that in Afghanistan and
through it lives of many such as Hilda Moalmi and the outlook of law have been changed. In
fact, according to Vijay Varman, 2018, the film is regarded as Erin Brockovich of immigration, a
film of the early 2000s that expounds on women empowerment.
