Introduction
Nurse practitioners, also called nurse clinicians, are licensed autonomous clinicians
whose work includes prevention of diseases and managing people lives. They qualify through
advanced training and hence are seen as care providers able to meet the demand for care
(Poghosyan, Boyd, & Knutson, 2014). Nursing practitioners are allowed and trained to diagnose
injuries and illnesses, interpret diagnostic tests and prescribe medication. However, they cannot
perform major surgeries, which are reserved for physicians. Nurse practitioners can specialize in
some areas through advanced learning in nursing schools. They can specialize in acute care
nurses, emergency nurses, pediatric nurses, and neonatal nurse practitioners.
