“Funeral Oration of Pericles in Ancient History”
Funeral oration is a eulogy that was narrated by an orator in the ancient Greece. The
orator was appointed and had to fulfill this as a duty given to him. Pericles was appointed to
give this eulogy after the end of the first Peloponnesian war. He was a Greek general and this
portrayed his patriotism and political standing in Athens. He advocated for democracy, which
to him was the best form of government and viewed Athens as a superior city-state to those
neighboring.
In his oration, Thucydides puts it that the culture of the Athenians was upfront.
Three days before the ceremony the bones of the fallen soldiers were laid out in the tent and
the friends brought to the relatives offering and then a funeral process...
