ESSAY SET 2: PERSONAL IDENTITY AND POSTHUMANITY Due: Monday, March 18th, in class You may write on one of the following topics. Your paper is to be double-spaced and no more than 3 pages in length. Make certain that your name is on the paper, that the pages are numbered, and that you specify exactly which question you're answering. 1. Which criterion of personal identity do you find most compelling---the psychological criterion, or the bodily criterion? In answering this you may draw on any one (or any combination) of the writers we have read, including Locke, Reid, and Michaels, as well as the movie, Moon. State what you take the criterion to be---explain it as fully as you can---and then address whether or not you think there may be problems with it. 2. Would you want to be posthuman in any (or all) of the senses described by Bostrom? Can you think of any objections to being posthuman? (Bostrom raises a number of objections, and briefly responds to them, on pp.230-2. You might consider taking one or two of these objections and developing them, or considering one of Sandel's objections.) Remember: A single sentence in defense of a view, or attacking it, isn't liable to convince anyone---and especially not someone who opposes you---so take the time to develop your position. And once again, order, clarity, economy, and precision are essential to good philosophical prose.

Whether I would like to be a Post Human
Bostrom (2008) discusses some of the posthumanism aspects, both positive and
negative. It would be interesting to celebrate my 200th birthday and still feel rejuvenated or as
strong as any 20-year old that is walking the streets out there. Each passing day would be
nothing but a joy since there is no worry of growing old or being put down by terminal illnesses
or diseases such as dementia that are often associated with old age (Bostrom, 2008). In the
post-human years, it is possible to imagine that new forms of art would have been invented. To
