2. What were the major elements conducive to Cuban wars of independence. Why did the major independence heroes (Maceo and Martí) spoke of Cuba as a nation with no races? While some of the new republics during the 19th century were able to maintain their
territorial integrity, some split out into some states. The inhabitants of these new republics faced
challenges which were more complex than just the demarcation of the geographical boundaries.
Some of the new republics faced the more complex challenge of defining and consolidating
themselves into autonomous republics (Chasteen 138). With the old structure removed, the
inhabitants of each of the new republics set out programs to create a post-colonial social,
political and economic order. There were myriad and imposing challenges which confronted
these new republics. These new republics appeared as ungovernable for some time, but their
governance took shape after a long wait.
