Challenges of Technology facing the Health sector and the Future Improvements
This paper deals with reviewing DR. Robert Watcher’s ideas one-day computerization of
the field of medicine will bring about disruptive innovation. My work is to provide evidence
from the text that explains that the society will proceed to a state the personnel of healthcare will
be able to use technology effectively in their work. I will also describe challenges that are there
at the moment and provide what can be inferred from the arguments of Watcher. Humans tend to
trust everything done by computers according to Dr. Robert. However, with digitalization, some
unanticipated problems are expected for example overdose. This is because doctors will not be
monitoring patients as expected.
Though technology has created a lot of mess at the moment, Watcher is providing hopes to
the society that in the coming days the health care sector will be of success and be able to use
technology in providing effective services to the community. The following is some evidence to
support these claims.
Dr. Robert claims that in the future, the health personnel should use computers to help
them instead of making them their masters. Currently, doctors leave the processors to perform all
the tasks, and if they fail, they lead to failure of the whole field of medicine and may even cause
death or deformity of people. So that doctors can work harmoniously with technology in the
SURNAME 2
future, the health personnel should go back to their professional work of treating, discovering,
teaching and diagnosing. So we have to blame the doctors for negligence in their job and not
computers. For example, the patient in Dr. Robert's hospital, who went through the overdose
with less damage, would have gulped down handful after handful of pills, more than he had ever
used. (Watcher & Robert)
Making the current technological systems work better will help the health personnel to
utilize technology to benefit society. Mr. Robert proposes that in the future, that we should
improve our data-driven technologies such as artificial intelligence to help in treating diseases
and conditions and to introduce better options of treating and preventing diseases and this will
contribute to an overall benefit to the society. Robotics and voice assistants should be improved
into better versions to help the health care personnel in treating people effectively. The career
areas to benefit include rehabilitation and medical medication management.
In the coming future, there will be a relief to the society whereby they will save on
finances and time. Through the use of NHS data, it will be cheaper to come up with new
evidence on the effectiveness of interventions. In the current days, this has been a total mess in
finding new evidence, but Dr. Robert gives hope to society and health personnel. (Watcher &
Robert)
Developments must be made in the technology sector by protecting people's private data
and avoid sharing it. According to Dr. Watcher, It is important not to disclose private data, but it
acts as a barrier to the sharing of data which is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of
patients. It is not right to lock all healthcare data of people with the aim of protecting private
data. The current technological systems are poorly designed and implemented, and they usually
SURNAME 3
contribute to errors. To facilitate this improvement, recommendations of the review of data
security by the national data guardian should be applied.
They are implementing the user-centered design. In the future, systems of technology must
be designed considering the users who are patients. To ensure that the healthcare personnel
works with technology harmoniously to help the society, the user based system should be
implemented and intervened more professionally and technologically.
Dr. Robert emphasizes that interoperability should be developed from the start. He gives
hope to the society and medical personnel that the efforts which are local and regional for
promoting sharing of data and interoperability should be invested on. By the year 2020, national
standards which deal with interoperability should be enhanced. Furthermore, the team which
provides advice to patients promises to give patients a chance to be free to access their electronic
data including clinical notes. This shows a bright future in the health sector and society at large.
(Harvest).
The technology department should provide basic training to health personnel and society
for them to adapt to the technical changes. The mess that exists at the moment is contributed by
implementing technology to the health sector is just an automatic process of following
procedures. Adaptive changes will occur when experts I technology provide guidelines of how
technology can be utilized to make the life of society better.
All stakeholders should understand the aim of digitization. Both the society and the health
personnel should be aware that the goal of introducing technology to the health sector is to
improve the health of people and lower the costs of catering for treatment. The future of
technology and health sector will be comfortable if this idea is implemented. There are many
SURNAME 4
challenges contributed by the involvement of technology in the health sector at the moment.
They include:
Patients are taking overdose drugs without their consent. According to Dr. Richard, a
teenager on the pediatric ward was given a high overdose prescription of an antibiotic. This
problem was brought about by software in which it defaulted an inappropriate unit of
measurement and made the prescriber o choose among various options of drugs without an
ability to construct the correct order. Technology, therefore, has led to people being negligent.
This is because a qualified doctor gave a prescription which is not common, the nurse packed 39
tablets in different envelops and the patient who took the great medication.
Another problem is that health personnel have made the computers their masters.
According do doctor Richard; computers should be used as servants to help the medical team in
making work more accessible. The doctors instead of doing their job in medicine for treating,
teaching and diagnosing among others they leave the tasks to computers.
The health, as well as the society, have trusted what the computers do more forgetting that just
as human beings they can make errors. Humans are very biased in having faith in the
technological devices, and if they fail, they contribute to loss both to health personnel and
society.
A lot of funds have been used to facilitate the office of the national coordinator to make
better the exchanges of health information between health personnel and institutions. Funds used
in funding should have been used in the innovation and development and research to identify the
programs that can work and those that are impossible so that to avoid wastage of money.
