Introduction
Different states offer different alternatives for felons to exercise their right to vote. For
example, in the period that preceded 2005, ex-felons had to make applications to the governor to
be allowed to participate in the voting process in some states such as Iowa. Through the
automatic restoration of the rights to ex-felons, there are some immediate changes such as the
increase in the number of felons voting. The question of restoration of ex-felon rights to vote is
one that has had increased attention because of issues such as human rights fairness and
American democracy issues. The number of people who are disfranchised from voting is over
five million due to being associated with crime (Porter, 2010). To understand the issue of the
restoration of voting rights for felons, there is a need to look at the alternatives provided for exfelons.
