Here is your chance to earn 20 Extra Credit points while exploring an area of art or architecture covered in this module that interests you. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to further explore one of the art forms below, by conducting your own research and writing a 5-paragraph essay (approximately 1.5 pages, double-spaced, 12 point font) on the information you find. Directions: 1. Choose from one of these art or architectural areas covered in Chapters 10 and 11: . Mask-making and masquerading: Textbook examples: Fig. 11-15 Senofu masquerader; Fig. 11-16 "Beautiful Lady" dance mask, Senofu; Fig. 11-17 Satimbe masquerader; Fig. 11-18 Mende female mask; Fig. 11-19 Bwoom masquerader, Kuba; Fig. 11-20 Ngady Amwaash mask, Kuba, Contemporary African art (ca. 1980's to present day): Textbook Examples: Fig. 11-25 Trigo Piula, Ta Tele, 1988; Fig. 11-26 Willie Bester, Homage to Steve Biko, 1992; Fig. 11-27 Paa Joe, Airplane and cow coffins, 2000. 2. Choose at least one textbook example from the lists above as a jumping off point for your research. Try to find scholarly articles and/or videos about the art form that you choose. In your research, you are looking for similar art works or architecture to that in our textbook, but not the same - you are trying to find new works and new information. Try to find at least three (3) new artworks or buildings to discuss in your essay. 3. Write your essay about the new artworks or buildings that you discovered. Your essay should include: An introduction: One paragraph in which you should state which art form you chose, briefly describe it (materials, process, etc.) and why you chose it. Body: at least three paragraphs describing the three new artworks or buildings you found in your research (please include artist if known, title or description, materials, date if known, and current location). How are they similar/different from the textbook examples? What new information about your works did you discover? Conclusion: One paragraph in which you should state what appealed to you about the artworks or buildings that you found (why did you choose them?). Images: Include an image for each of your three found works in your submission. Citations: must be in a correct format, at least three (3) sources (scholarly articles and/or videos, please).
