Description

Write a paper (2,000‐2,500 words) in which you apply the concepts of epidemiology and nursing research to a communicable disease ( influenza). Refer to "Communicable Disease Chain," "Chain of Infection," and the CDC website for assistance

Communicable Disease Selection

Influenza

Epidemiology Paper Requirements

Address the following:

  1. Describe the chosen communicable disease, including causes, symptoms, mode of transmission, complications, treatment, and the demographic of interest (mortality, morbidity, incidence, and prevalence). Is this a reportable disease? If so, provide details about reporting time, whom to report to, etc.
  2. Describe the social determinants of health and explain how those factors contribute to the development of this disease.
  3. Discuss the epidemiologic triangle as it relates to the communicable disease you have selected. Include the host factors, agent factors (presence or absence), and environmental factors. Are there any special considerations or notifications for the community, schools, or general population?
  4. Explain the role of the community health nurse (case finding, reporting, data collection, data analysis, and follow‐up) and why demographic data are necessary to the health of the community.
  5. Identify at least one national agency or organization that addresses the communicable disease chosen and describe how the organizations contribute to resolving or reducing the impact of disease.
  6. Discuss a global implication of the disease. How is this addressed in other countries or cultures? Is this disease endemic to a particular area? Provide an example.

A minimum of three peer‐reviewed or professional references is required.

Influenza
Influenza is an infectious respiratory disease that is caused by the Influenza virus
which infects the human nose or throat and at other times the lungs. According to the Center
for Disease Control (CDC), Flu may cause mild to severe illnesses which may in some cases
lead to death. CDC establishes yearly Flu vaccination as the best way of preventing
Influenza. This paper explicates the various symptoms of influenza, transmission modes,
morbidity and mortality as well as the epidemiology triangle for influenza. Additionally, the
paper focuses on the role of the health care nurse and a national agency that addresses flu
infections. According to CDC, influenza virus attacks the upper part of human’s respiratory
system. Often, the virus use animals as the virus carriers.
Flu virus mutates so rapid that new vaccines should be produced on annual basis
primarily because the virus strains change from time to time. According to a recent survey,
the infection rate of Flu virus increases through colder months to peak in the winter season.
In fact, the highest infectious duration is called the flu season where in excess of 250,000
people lose their lives during the flu season every year. However, public health nurses may
limit the effects of Flu virus by conducting vaccination campaigns and preventative care all
year round.
Description of Influenza

Influenza is an infectious disease affecting the human respiratory system. Influenza
viruses spread primarily by small droplets coming out of the infected persons when coughing,
sneezing or even talking. It is notable that the tiny droplets lands on the healthy person’s
nose, eyes or mouth causing the spread of the virus to the person. In rare occasions, influenza
spreads when a healthy person touches objects and surfaces with the influenza viruses and
later touching their noses, mouth or even eyes. It is thus apparent that flu viruses spread

through moist airborne particles expelled by an infected person through sneezing among
other ways. The risk of contracting the disease increases when an individual inhales the
moist particles containing the viruses (World Health Organization, 2016). As such, CDC
recommends wearing of facial masks by individuals who have not been immunized against
influenza when exposed to victims of influenza.

Individuals infected with flu viruses may show flu symptoms from the first day when
they get the virus up to the fourth day. It is noteworthy that influenza is different from cold
and thus requires higher attention when detected. People with influenza may exhibit all or
some of the flu symptoms including cough, fever, sore throat, headaches, body aches, chills,
runny or stuffy nose, fatigue, muscle pain as well as vomiting and diarrhoea in some
occasions. When the virus spreads to the stomach, Flu victims experience gastrointestinal
distress. According to the survey, flu is no longer infectious after the fifth to seventh day.
Nonetheless, the symptoms persist in s...
