To do this problem, we can use a process called FOIL.  FOIL stands for (F)irst, (O)uter, (I)nner, (L)ast.

For "F"  we multiply the first term of each parentheses:  12y and y getting  12y²

For "O" we multiply the outer terms of each parentheses:  12y and -5 getting -60y

For "I" we multiply the inner terms of each parentheses:  9 and y getting 9y

And for "L" we multiply the last terms of each paretheses: 9 and -5 getting -45

Now we add them all together:  12y² - 60y + 9y - 45

Combine like terms and our final answer is:  12y² - 51y - 45
