A ball is rolling at 5.5 mls along a horizontal table top that is 1.4 m above the ground. The ball rolls off the edge of the table. (a) How far does the ball land from the edge of the table and how long does it take to fall the 1.4 m? (b) What is the ball's velocity when it hits the ground?

If you choose downward direction as positive with origin at edge of table top

 vox=vo=5.5m/s,  voy=0, ay=+g=9.8m/s

to find the time

y=voy*t + 1/2gt^2

1.4=0+1/2*9.8t^2 or t^2=1.4/4.9=0.28 s^2 or t=0.53 s

Horizontal distance

x=voxt=5.5 m/s * 0.53 s=2.94m


vy=voy + gt=gt=0.53 s *9.8 = 5.2 m/s

v=sqrt(vx^2+vy^2)=7.56 m/s
