For their homecoming parade, the students of wheaton college have created a colorful banner, 47 meters in length, that is made of two pieces of parachute material. The short piece is 17 meters shorter than the long piece. Find the length of each piece

Sep 29th, 2015

Let the length the longer piece be x

Then the shorter piece has length x-17

Now

x+x-17=47

2x=47+17

2x=64

x=32

The longer one is 32 meters long

The shorter one is 32-17= 15 meters long

Professor Fullerton was demonstrating the ease of making a bar graph using information about students' home states. He was amazed that his class of 32 represented only 3 states. There were 8 more students born in Texas than were born in Oklahoma. The number of students born in Arizona was 9 fewer than the number born in Oklahoma. How many were born in each state?

Sep 30th, 2015

Let the number of students born in Oklahoma be = K

There were 8 more students born in Texas than were born in Oklahoma

Meaning number of students born in Texas is (K+8)

The number of students born in Arizona was 9 fewer than the number born in Oklahoma

Meaning the number of students born in Arizona is (K-9)

But the sum is 32

K+K+8+K-9=32

3K-1=32

3K=33

K=11

Number of students born in Oklahoma be = K=11

Number of students born in Texas is (K+8)=11+8=19

number of students born in Arizona is (K-9)=11-8=3
