Reflect the concepts addressed in this week's lesson plan and required reading. Recall a
challenging experience in either your personal or professional life. In the initial response, start
with an introduction that includes a brief description of two core values that influence your
nursing practice and interaction with others. Provide a concise description of the challenging
experience. What core values were challenged in this experience? What lessons were learned
from this experience? How did the experience inform future professional behaviors, decisions,
and actions? Provide a specific example on how lessons learned from the challenging experience
were applied in your professional practice. Use at least one outside scholarly reference to support
your position.
Answer:
The two significant nursing core values that are relevant to my practice are patientcentered care and teamwork/collaboration. Patient-centered care is rendering the care while
giving attention to the patient preference, needs, values and noting the patient choices while
recognizing the patient as a great decision maker in care provision (Schmidt, 2016).
Collaboration is the capacity to work effectively around the nursing and other disciplinary teams
while being the median of effective communication, team learning and nurturing a great patient
and family-based care.
I confronted a scenario that challenged patient-centered care. Operating as a psychiatric
nurse, handling a patient who was grieving from schizophrenia transformed into a battleground.
The patient was to receive a dose of chlorpromazine which I had administered. The patient
needed a dose of artene, a drug used to stabilize mood. I had to weigh between doing as the
patient required or doing what is ethical in nursing practice. The patient needed the medication
because he was damn conscious of the good feeling it would bring to his mood by antagonizing
the chlorpromazine. I had to stand to firm and do what is good for the patient. After a few days,
the patient came and reported a vast improvement.
I learned that as much as it is better to understand the patient and respect their opinions,
we as nurses should make our judgment and do what is right to the patient while explaining the

rationale of our decisions. If the patient understands your action, it is better, if he or she does not
understand the effect even after explanation, do not be stressed up, believe that one day the
patient will come to realize your motive. Psychiatric patients are fond of demanding for drugs
that stabilize moods even if it is not indicated; furthermore, they do command to be given
medications that will make them feel high. As a new nurse in the psychiatric department, I had to
change this culture by always explaining and doing what is ethical and good for the patient.
