I've heard that some say that 1 + 1 does not equal 2, why is that?math

1+1 does always equal 2. I've heard these erroneous claims before and even seen "proofs," but they always ignore some rule(s) to show the proposed equality or inequality. Numbers do not have meaning by themselves, but rather are defined by what they do to or with each other in a certain operation, in this case addition. 1+1 is, by definition, identically 2. I suggest reading some number theory for this type of thinking.
