Description

  • Times new roman 12 point font
  • This is for the additional 4 pages
  • Any summary or explication should be brief and likely confined to the introductory paragraph, in which you also name the texts and authors, ask your question, and present your claim.
  • Use specific evidence (i.e., sentences, words, and phrases from the texts) to support your claim. The group presentation was a way for you to practice effective and correct use of quoted material. This paper should demonstrate your ability to do this on your own.
  • This should be a conversation, not a one-side-at-a-time comparison. See the model on Blackboard, which outlines specific points of contrast and discusses both stories in each paragraph.

ANALYSIS OF THEMES AND MESSAGES WITHIN NARRATIVES
The narratives that shall be discussed in the following essay are, “The story of an
hour”, by Kate Chopin, “Depression changes everything”, by Jay Hughes and
“Understanding grief”, by Jane Brody. In brief, the first story delves into the life of a wife
with a heart condition upon receiving news of the death of her husband initially she is sad but
gains a spirit of freedom and escape from the confinement she felt in her marriage leaves her.
She, however, gets a shock when she meets her husband who as it were was alive and well.
She responds to this news by getting a heart attack and passing on. The second story is about
a man who has been in a relationship with a lady for 8 years. Everything has been going well
between the two of them throughout this time however, this changes once her grandfather
becomes ill. She then becomes depressed and everything in their relationship takes a turn for
the worse. She becomes irritable to live with and this, in turn, begins to end their long term
relationship. The third narrative is an article that delves into the topic of understanding grief.
The author discusses how people deal with the issue of grief in their lives. He mentions that

different between various people and often times may take longer than one would expect.
Based on the content of the three narratives a query can be posed are the consequences of
grief avoidable in life experiences? It can, therefore, it can be asserted that grief is
inescapable in our lives, we all find unique and shared techniques of dealing with the sadness

Chopin is that grief is different to different people some people take it in a difficult way
others handle it in unique and uncommon ways. A quote from the passage that helps to
support this argument is “The vacant stare and the look of terror that had followed it went
from her eyes” (Chopin 1894), this phrase helps to indicate how the sadness that she had after
the news of the death of her began to affect her state of mind as she began to come to terms
with the loss and to try and make sense of what this m...
