Organizing Organizing involves coming up with an organization structure and allocating resources in an effective manner to ensure the objectives of the organization are achieved. The structure in this case refers to the framework that guides effort. Often, managers represent the structure in a chart in which the graphical relationships between different offices are shown. Also, organizing involves designing job tasks and deciding who does what. Moreover, organization involves clustering job tasks or departmentalization according to functions, products, clients, or geographical locations. In a healthcare setting, organizing role of management includes developing new job tasks, job redesigning to improve vertical and horizontal integration, and reducing/increasing specialization in order to enhance productivity (Wallick & Stager, 2002). Manager’s role is to ensure the organization structure and job tasks conform to what other organizations are doing in the healthcare industry. For example, they are expected to ensure the structure is suitable for the kind of services offered. This may include structures that are focused on continuously improving patient care. The Role of a Health Care Manager HCS/325 Version 9 2 Planning Planning involves setting of objectives or goals and deciding on how they will be achieved. When planning, managers take into consideration the environmental factors that affect their organization and the future. Examples of plans include strategic plans, operational plans, and tactical plans. In the healthcare setting, manager plan by scanning the environment, coming up with a set of shortterm or long-term goals/objectives, and determining how to act. Good planners know what is important for the healthcare facility. For example, some of the key areas to be included in planning include deployment of better information systems, improving office management, and enhancing patient care. Good planning leads to greater efficiency and productivity, and increased funding or sales. Planning is an essential aspect of the healthcare industry. Mangers have to design strategic, tactical, and/or operational plans that improve service delivery in the healthcare industry as a whole. Thus, they work together with other managers from other healthcare organizations to develop plans that promote patient care and satisfaction. Controlling Controlling is the function of management which involves setting performance or output standards and ensuring actual performance is consistent with these standards. It involves coming up with a set of standards, measuring performance based on these standards, and correcting inconsistencies where applicable. In healthcare settings, standards are very important because they ensure the safety of both staff and patients. Effective healthcare managers are familiar with the best healthcare standards. For example, they are expected to be conversant with medical standards, bedside experience, and front office management. Their role is to establish these standards in their organization and continuously compare performance against these standards to establish and correct deviations (Mintzberg, 1973). Usually, there are established standards of care which all healthcare organizations must adhere to. As such, managers ensure they understand these standards and implement them in their organizations. Additionally, they are involved in establishing and improving healthcare standards for the industry. Leading Leading refers to using social and informal sources of influence to motivate, encourage, or inspire action. Good organizational leaders are loved by their subordinates. The subordinates are enthusiastic about what they do, and they are quick to put in extra effort. In healthcare organizations job tasks are very engaging. Thus, employees need strong leaders who can continuously charge their spirits and give them incentives to maintain high levels or performance which involves building trust. Typically, leading involves listening to the concerns of all staff and showing interest in what matters most to them. The leader’s job is to make the long working hours and difficult times worth everything. Good leadership is desired to make an organization exceptional in relation to the industry. Often, excellent healthcare organizations stand out above the rest due to good leadership. This is because members of staff are happy and give their best which enables patients to get the best service in the industry. Copyright © 2017 by University of Phoenix. All rights reserved. The Role of a Health Care Manager Reflection
My definition of a health manager has broadened after the interaction with the lessons of
the course. Previously I imagined a health manager as a senior care professional whose work
was to supervise and monitor the juniors under his/her docket. I did not imagine that a health
manager plays more roles and responsibilities in their facilities other than that one. However,
the course has enlightened me to view a health manger from different perspectives and as a
leader in the health sector.
Currently, my broadened understanding of a health manager is a care profession that
monitors and supervises the business aspects like personnel, information technology,
operations and finances of any health care facility or institutions (learn.org, 2019). Health
managers’ primary role is to ensure that quality health care services are delivered equitably to
all patients. The role calls for the health managers to provide the care professional ...
