More and more people are very concerned about their diet. By investigating the Macquarie University food court, we are aiming to have some deep understanding of the school cafeteria for these students. Is the food court of MQ university the best choice? If not, then what should they do to make everyone more willing to eat at school? We are going to explore: -How was your experience at the hub? -What factors influence your decision to eat at the hub? -Are u satisfied with the food options there? -What prevents you from eating here and entices you to go elsewhere? -What can the hub do to improve your experience and/or entice you to go there more often? Method We choose in-depth interviews. The benefits is that we can understand more details through open-ended questions, rather than broadly yes or no, because if we consider using focus group, there is a drawback that some people don’t like to talk, the information will be scarce. Sample There where 25 respondents from university of Macquarie: **males and **females, **domestic students and ** international students. Procedures The informal interviews were started from 13:30pm to 14:45 in March 13,each respondent had 15 minutes to answer five open-ended questions about build a better Macquarie University food court. Results According to all five people interviewed, most of them have more concerns on the variety of the choice of food and the convenience of facilities. Especially the facilities, seats and tables provided by cafes cannot satisfy the amount of students who are dieting there at all. Most of them are forced to eat their food outside or choose to takeaway. It would be better to help those students who consider of eating at hub to make decision if university can provide more seats and tables. Example Comments Variables / Themes Verbatim remarks Food choice Respondent 1: The choice of hub food is very limited. Only one Chinese meal can be chosen. This is not enough for international students. Respondent 2: Although there are not enough types in the school hub, they are quite complete. There are pizza, sushi, Chinese food, and salads to choose for. Respondent 3: If the hub can add more other cuisines, such as Thai food, Malaysian food, etc. Respondent4: Food taste Food price Environment Summary: As the consequence, it is easy to see that the inspiration of students when making decision of where to eat are mostly affected by the food available and dieting environment. Students who consider eating outside of campus are mostly because there no place for them to seat down enjoy their meal. And others who want a different choice of food might also choose to eat somewhere else. Summary and Next Step The hub at campus could basically provide students a nice, convenient and fast place to help students deal with their daily meal when they are have some all day classes at campus. Students would more like to eat at hub as long as there can be more seats added to be serviced. Besides, the variety of food supplied can also attract more students to diet at campus, the university can really think about expanding more space of cafes area, or consider of building a hall instead. Q1: • Po Tek (22): From my experiences that I often purchase foods and drinks from the food hub, it was really satisfied. Apparently the excellent feature of the hub that have captured my satisfaction is the wide variety of food stores. There are plenty • Tong Wu (22): Not really good, the environment is noisy, The Taste of the food is not good, sometimes people have no place to sit at all. • Jicuo Duo (21) : think it’s very good, because school provides students and staff with an excellent learning environment and working environment and working environment, the import point is that students can save time to eat lunch at hub, the meals are delicious as well. The overall feeling of the hub is that it is a very comfortable part of a university living environment. It is very comfortable. On the other hand, you can chat with your friends or you can discuss some class question with your classmates and enjoy the beautiful environment of the school. • Jie Fu (21): bad, noisy dining environment, the choice of food is not much, The hub is semi-open structure which is really hot in summer. • Shuang Zheng (20):Not very good, because the type of food is very limited. Q2: • Po Tek (22): There are few factors that influence me to try the foods at food hub and usually stick to it. Well, the initial driven that influence me to first give it a try at food hub, it was obviously about the store atmosphere and convenience. The various food stores combination make the whole food court looks neat, arrangeable and clean. That was what grabbed my first attention. Second, I could say about the foods. Since it is the food hub, thus important component that allow me stick to it, is how the foods taste. Well, I usually ordered pizza from the store and the taste is beyond amazing and delicious enough for me to rebuy every time I go to the food hub. • Tong WU (22) : Maybe I will eat when I have no money, because the food in the hub is very cheap after all. • Jicuo Duo (21): The first one is that I can save a lot of time. - The second one is that food is good. The third one is that I can enjoy the school environment. • Jie Fu (21): Accessibility, when I have class, I only have half an hour going to the hub to have meals, is more accessible. • Shuang Zheng (20): Financial. Because compared to the price of the shopping center, it is cheaper and the taste is not bad. Q3: • Po Tek (22): To me, the varieties of food is just fine. They included many foods from all nations, like Western foods, Thai, Sushi, Malay, Chinese and even the drinks like Boost brand. I think the quantities of choice for students to choose from, which is considerably stupendous. It allows international students to eat their choice of foods from their home country to suit their taste as well. • Tong Wu (22): very dissatisfied, I think there should be more snacks, like seafood, cakes and omelet. • Jicuo Duo (21): I’m kind of good, because there are many people from all over the world who come to Macquarie to study, the school hub has fewer ingredients. For example,I am an international student from China. I think there is a little more Chinese restaurant in the hub, it will help to chase the taste, I think most of the hubs are local Australians, so many people can not eat the taste of their hometown, maybe add more restaurants like that, those students who come from other countries will feel like home. • Jie Fu (21): no, I am not, I would take lunch from home or buy some bread. • Shuang Zheng (20): Not particularly satisfied, because the food here is less selective, more singular, and many foods are not. I hope that the hub could open more drinks stores. Q4: Po Tek (22): Well to me, Food hub is kind of my priority alternative. Yet there are some days when I study at the buildings that very distance from the food hub, like Art Faculty. I wouldn’t walk all the way to food hub to eat my brunch. So I would rather choose to eat at other food courts in Macquarie that is near to my study building. Therefore, the only reason that would prevent not to go there is the distance issue. • Tong Wu(22): It must be the taste of food, the food its difficult to swallow, and there are many real restaurants to choose from at the shopping center opposite the school. • Jicuo Duo (21): Maybe there is some limits to the type of food, and I hope that the school can install some air conditioners in the hub, because when the summer temperature is high is high, the students and staffs can not eat in the hot environment of the hub, because it is very uncomfortable. • Jie Fu (21): The taste of the food and the health are important. First, they don’t have much tasty food in the hub. second, there are so many fast food, such as chips and nuggtes. • Shuang Zheng (20): The shop here is not particularly suitable for my taste, the noodles and the rice I want to eat, there is no here. • • • • • Q5: Po Tek (22): Control in food line: speedy service is very important to every consumer. Probably the restaurants should work on break up the lines as much as possible per station, to avoid long que especially on the peak hours like break time or class finish in lunch time and evening. Tong Wu (22): Frist, build a real building, second, put more chairs, at least to ensure that most people can set to eating. Jicuo Duo (21): Maybe can add some for example: Chatime, Gongcha, those kind of drink shop, and also my suggestion is that the school can install some air conditioners for the hub to create a comfortable and cool dining environment. Jie Fu (21): Hope the Hub can provide more dessert, infrastructure needs more improvement . Shuang Zheng (20): I hope that the hub can have a better building, the seats can be increased, and the hub is too hot in summer.
