Abstract
Reports that have emerged from the U.S. Department of Education indicate that schools are among
the safe places for children. Contrary to this opinion, there have been many cases of shooting over
the past decade which has resulted into fear among the students, parents and teachers. This is
supported by the study conducted by the National Threat Assessment Center (NTAC) in 37 school
shootings since 1999 involving 41 attackers. They assert that the attackers were either continuing
students at the school or were previous students who chose to attack with an intention. The study
was not inclusive of shootings related to personal issues, gang involvement or disputes in
relationships. Some of the reasons that provided by NTAC which would lead to the school related
shootings included easy access to guns, bullying and peer pressure.
Further findings from the School Survey on Crime and Safety indicate that as per the 2015 to 2016
school year, violence per 1,000 students was higher in middle schools (27 incidents) compared to
high school (16 incidents) and primary schools (15 incidents). This was attributed to the higher
bullying activities within the middle schools in comparison to the high school and primary schools.
Other than bullying, drug abuse was also found to be a factor that contributed to such violence.
Other than these studies, in the current news in the television networks there are many reports that
involve the similar cases. For instance, the CNN (cable news network) reports that 21 weeks into
2018 there occurred 23 gun related violence which led to either death or injuries. Some of the
shootings resulted as a form of rivalry between the students, relationship issues, grading issues
which involves the student and teachers, racism, religious differences, revenge and environmental
influence from violent families or societies etc.
In consideration of the following studies and research findings it is clear that the shooting and gun
related violence is a great compromise to the security of the school, students, teachers, facilities.
This creates a need to Implement security strategies that would help provide the mitigation
measures that would improve the security of the school facilities.
