Virgil's Aeneid Analysis
1. Virgil's Aeneid (written in Latin in the 1st century B.C.E.) is obviously deeply indebted to Homer's Iliad and Odyssey (written in Greek in the 8th century B.C.E.), not simply in terms of substance and style but even in terms of the characters. Find one place in the text of the Aeneid that reminds you of a comparable place in Homer's Iliad (the opening stanzas, or "Invocation" of each poem, for example) - either in terms of plotting or style, and comment on the similarities and differences between the texts. Be sure to use a brief quotation (or a few) from one or both texts to help your fellow students identify the points you're making.2. The propagandistic purpose of Virgil's Aeneid - to explain, justify, celebrate, glorify, historicize, and mythologize the founding of Rome and the Roman Empire - crops up throughout the poem, from Aeneas's prophetic dream on the night of the destruction of Troy, to the reminders he gets in visions and visitations from various gods, to the history of the future depicted on the shield created by Vulcan. Find one or more of these places and comment on how you think Virgil uses the epic format to define Roman culture. Virgil seems to suggest, in some places, that Rome is the new Troy, that Roman culture is Trojan culture, that, in the words of Aeneas, in "Latium ... Fate holds out/ a homeland ... [and] the kingdom of Troy will rise again" (Book I, lines 240-242), but then at the end, he seems to suggest otherwise, that "Troy has fallen--and fallen let her stay--/ with the very name of Troy!" (Book XII, lines 960-961). How is Virgil defining Rome by its mythological past? What values does Virgil seem to emphasize as Trojan or Roman? How does this contrast with other cultures and values depicted in the book, for example, the culture of the Greeks, the Carthaginians, or the Rutulians?

Familiar or Unfamiliar Music
You will see that answers will vary from student to student simply because they are set up to be subjective. Your effort counts as there are no wrong answers.
After you complete the readings for this week, and the Additional Assignment project, watch the following videos: Make the effort to listen to each piece of music in its entirety whether this music is your kind of music or not.
Listen to each piece then by using the Five (5) short questions, apply them to each one of the six music video examples beginning with Rufus Blaq. All of the other works are considered to reflect classical music; even if it isn't what you thought was "classical music".
Always name the piece or composer, (one who writes the music) or performer and write in complete sentence format. Number the answer to match the work.
Is it music? Is it good and useful or potentially harmful?
When or where should this music be played and not be played?
For what age level is this not appropriate?
Is it pleasing and beautiful? (Watch out, your answer may expose your defaults and amount of music and history knowledge).
Why is it important to keep an open mind when listening to unfamiliar music?
1. Rufus Blaq I Love My Haters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AF_NvZOCZOw
2. Ligeti's Mysteries of the Macabre: Singer and conductor, Barbara Hannigan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ireZYjEkpac

These days, everything is offensive to someone. This is a one-act classical music stage opera. It demonstrates somewhat losing their sanity. You can hear a brief yet clear example of sanity at timestamp 16:21, or is it? At timestamp 18:18 ("I am not ill") recognizes someone who is mentally lost but can't recognize it. It doesn't matter whether you "like or don't like" this piece, it is a work of expression.

5. Berg's Classical music opera earlier 20th century: WARNING! Not suitable for young eyes: Monitor and censoring is your responsibility! The first video of the opera LULU is mainly a very brief explanation on the subject of Lulu and Jack the Ripper. I trust that most, if not all, of you, know at least something about the notorious killer, "Jack the Ripper".
6. This is a fusion of 19th-century classical style violin improvisation in Hip Hop Violin style certainly embraces the best of two styles. What is your opinion of this music? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLX7V_eDT5U

Assignment: Creating Balance Through Placement
Assignment: Creating Balance Through PlacementEven if you are not consciously aware of it, your eyes and your brain respond more favorably to images that are in balance, or are symmetrical, than those that are not. For this reason, photographers can generate strong reactions from their audience by their use of balance—or by their choice to exclude it. Balance, or lack thereof, adds to the meaning of a photograph. In this Assignment, you will take a photograph, balancing the key elements within it through the careful placement of those elements. To prepare for this Assignment:Review Chapters 2 and 3 in the course text, The Photographer’s Eye.Choose three design features from this week’s reading to apply to your composition of a balanced photograph.Review the article, “Visual Balance—Means Taking Another Look” in this week’s Learning Resources and the website “Balance in Composition: Everything You Need to Know.”Consider how you will use design features to create balance in the composition of your photograph.Compose and take the photograph. The Assignment:Apply design basics to the composition of a balanced photograph by creating a 2-slide PowerPoint presentation that includes the following:Slide 1:In one photograph, apply three design features chosen to create balance in your photograph.Include a brief description of your photograph (title and subject).Slide 2:Write a 3-paragraph description of the three chosen design basics used to create balance in the composition of your photograph. Include answers to the following:Evaluate your effectiveness at achieving your photographic goal.Analyze what you might do differently next time. Explain.Be sure to cite at least one example from the course readings to support your writing.Sources to be used:Freeman, M. (2013). Ethical Responsibility
Many research psychologists have research teams they work with and some members of the team end up on the publications while others do not. For two months during summer, Ann conducted research as an undergraduate student at a well-known university. She spent long hours in the laboratory injecting mice with opiate blockers to look at pain tolerance. She was responsible for shocking them, as a test for pain tolerance, and euthanizing them at the end of the study. When the article was published months later, Ann was surprised to find her name was only included in a note of thanks. What do you think about this situation?Did Ann have a right to be upset, or should she have been grateful for the opportunity? Why?Do you think a psychology professor who has published a number of scientific articles is more knowledgeable about the field of psychology as compared to a professor who has not published? Why?Use the Internet to investigate the significance of the sequence in which authors' names appear on a paper. Discuss your findings.Given that research involves teamwork, do you think that the hierarchical implications of this sequence are appropriate?
