1) Describe how RAID Level 1 Operates?
2) Describe the advantages or disadvantages of such a system, in a university payroll system (in RAID 1 having a total of 30 drives), and if appropriate, suggest an alternative RAID system and explain your reasoning.

RAID 1, also known as data mirroring, entails replication of data identically to two or
more disks. In this level, there is no striping or parity—everything is replicated as it is in the
original copy. Thus, the user ends up with a mirrored set of data drives. One of the underlying
implications of this approach is that any of the drives can service any request made. Also, if the
request is simply broadcast across the entire set of drives, the service can be made by the drive
that gets to the data first. Some of the factors that affect servicing, in this case, include rotational
latency and seek time. As a result of this “perceived” competition among the data sets, there is a
high likelihood of the overall performance of the system improving significantly.
