Orville walks 400 m due east. He then continues to walk in a straight line either parallel or perpendicular to his initial displacement and stops 560 m northeast of his starting point. How far did he walk during the second portion of the trip and in which direction?

Answer: The second part of the trip was  m in the  direction.

400 m east = represent the base of the triangle = b

h = distance north

displacement represent the hypotenuse = hyp

We can find h using hypotenuse theorem

h = square-root(hyp^2-b^2) =square-root (560m^2-400m^2)

                                            =square-root(153600)

                                           =392 m

The second part of the trip is 392 m in the north direction.
