Lecture 8: Chapter 9 Question
Topic: Personality Development: The Hierarchy of Needs
In summary, the hierarchy of needs has five levels arranged from the strongest to the
weakest that directly impact and guide human behavior. They include physiological, safety,
belongingness and love, esteem, and self-actualization needs (Schultz, & Schultz, 2016).
Psychological needs are the strongest and direct human behavior directly. They include water,
food, and sex. Notably, everyone is equipped with all these needs at birth, and they use behaviors
to meet these needs are usually learned (Schultz, & Schultz, 2016). Importantly, people are not
activated by all the needs simultaneously, but it is only a single need that can dominate a
personality at a certain time. For instance, a thirsty individual is likely to be driven to satisfy this
psychological need. Essentially, everyone desires to meet all the five needs; due to socioeconomic inequalities in society, it is sometimes absolutely difficult to do so.
