7.06 -- Equilibrium Lab Report
Instructions: For this investigative phenomenon, you will observe the changes that result
when you add more or take away some of one of the components of the equilibrium and
determine if there are trends in the behavior of equilibrium systems. Record your
observation in the lab report below. You will submit your completed report.
Title: The investigation of how the concentration of the reactants and products in
a chemical reaction affect equilibrium
The objectives of this experiment were to investigate the influence of changing
(increasing or decreasing) the concentration of one component (reactant or
product) on the dynamic equilibrium of the reaction.
At equilibrium, the rate of the forward reaction is equal to the rate of the reversed
reaction. The chemical reaction still happens, but the system is in dynamic equilibrium,
so the concentrations of reactants and products do not change over time. The stress
caused by the changing of the amount of a reactant e.g. decreasing of the amount of
reactant will result in a response of the system to compensate for the changes. The
amount of reactant will be increased by the reverse reaction and dynamic equilibrium
will be achieved. In this particular experiment, the changing of the color of the solution in
the reaction between two cobalt complex will be used for observation how the changing
the amount of a reactant or product influence the reaction dynamic.
