United States Healthcare Reforms
The United States healthcare system has failed on several fronts. First, the United States
is the largest spender on healthcare in the world. This problem stems from the system’s failure to
manage and control costs. Healthcare, therefore, takes up a significant portion of the federal
budget. In 2018, for instance, the federal government’s spending on healthcare was close to $1.1
trillion compared to other equally developed countries such as Germany and Britain whose
spending on healthcare per person is half that of the United States. The healthcare system also
fails with regard to accessibility, with a significant percentage of the country’s population unable
to access quality healthcare. Furthermore, the system has failed to reduce the high infant
mortality rate, high chronic disease rate among the elderly, and increase the life expectancy at
birth. These and other challenges have prompted the government to seek solutions to reform the
healthcare system. This essay outlines some suggestions to better the United States’ healthcare
system.
The increasing costs of the healthcare system in the United States are increasingly
becoming unsustainable. The reforms should, therefore, begin by addressing cost. I suggest that
the government introduces some major changes to reduce the cost of healthcare. First, the
