Why is franchising continue to be very popular and growing  in the U.S.?

For examples, McDonald's, one of the largest fast food restaurants in the world, is a franchise [2]. This business has annual revenues and profits in the billions [1]. According to Nasdaq'w forecast earnings growth, this well known franchise, McDonald's, is expected to grow over the next five years [3]. Other large and well known  franchises are 7-eleven, Hampton's Inn & Suites, and Dunkin Donuts [1].
