Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

Using theories of behavior why is the recidivism rate for substance abuse so high? include 1 peer reviewed reference

It is no doubt that the recidivism ratefor substance abuse so high. One of the reasons behind this is the fact that the behavior change approaches used in our current parole systems are not that effective. Most courts still use standard behavior modification approaches which are still not up to standard in correcting the behavior of inmates. One of the key reasons why the use of these traditional methods is still the case is that the current prisons are quiet overcrowded such that the use of better methods cannot be effective. Pearson et al. (2002, 476) notes that some of the most effective approaches which prisons should use to reduce recidivism “include cognitive-behavior social skills development and cognitive skills (Reasoning and rehabilitation) programs.” Thus, the approaches used are the main problem.

These are approaches which will work to deter recidivism rate? or these are the antiquated approaches of the past?

Some of these approaches which can be used in the current cognitive-behavior social skills development and cognitive skills programs can include contingencies which has some tokens which can help one see the need to change behavior and activities like cleaning an area which still earns a token. Aggression replacement training for violent offenders can be also used as a cognitive behavior change program in such an environment. Thus a more involving approach is quite superior to any other tradition method.
