Alhadrami1 '' Life is fine'' by Langstone hughes LIT 315 Spring 2019 Alhadrami1 LIT315 20/3/2019 Life is Fine by Langston Hughes Introduction This is one of the most notable poems written by Langton Hughes. The poet is also a playwright, fiction writer, and novelist. The poem is an expression of the optimism he has after an attempt to end his life but which later make him want to live more. The plot is about a lover who contemplates committing suicide after his beloved lover deceives him. After trying to kill himself twice, he changes his mind and becomes more optimistic to live again. He reflects about his actions and realizes that there is still a lot of good reasons to live for, life is still good. The lines “So since I’m still here livin’, I guess I’ll live on” are a good example of the decision to stop the thoughts of killing himself and live on. This is a very well written poem about a man who is going through issues to the point of contemplating suicide but is able to make an about turn and see the good that life still has to offer. The theme of the poem is around this aspect of life being fine hence the title of the poem, Life is Fine. Alhadrami1 Analysis of the Poem As already stated in the introduction part, the poem is about a person who is thinking of killing himself but later changes his mind and decides to live and enjoy the goodness of life. The poem is written in the first person and as such it appears that it is Langton who was thinking of committing suicide. Even though the main overriding theme seems to be that of suicide and life the poem takes a rather humorous approach as opposed to a darker-toned approach that would have been expected of such as a poem about attempts to commit suicide. It appears that the character in the poem had attempted several times but comes up with several and humorous excuses not to kill himself such as the building being too tall or the water being too cold and such like excuses. The focus of the poem is to showcase the challenges that the readers go through regularly in their lives. It portrays possible feelings of frustrations that ordinary people go through in their lives which at times may lead them to think of committing suicide but they later look at the bigger picture of life and decide to soldier on despite the challenges. In my view, the character is not really into committing suicide but he is faced with several frustrations which are similar to what most people go through in their daily lives. The speaker is able to show that the character has the will to overcome the temptations to drown in the river and instead gather the courage and glimmer of hope to live again. He attempts to sink in the water to drown but says that had the water not been so cold, he would have sunk and died (Lines 7-8). In this case, the cold is a symbol of the challenges that people go through, but he also shows that we can overcome our challenges and find the strengths to live on. A Alhadrami1 similar scenario of mental strength and the ability to overcome the feeling of mental anguish and instead showcase the triumph of emotional maturity, the speaker goes to the sixteenth floor of a building to die but instead says it is too high. The lines (16-17) show the speaker saying that he may have jumped and died if the place was not so high. Again these lines do not show that the speaker is a coward, but someone who is able to overcome the temptations of mental anguish and replace them with the hope to live. Ultimately, the speaker has realized he doesn’t need to die as it will make his baby sad and this is indicated when he says that he would be dogged if his baby was to see him die (lines, 25-26) The Period or the Movement where the poem belongs Langton Hughes is a well-known poet, novelist, and playwright who ascribed to the Harlem Renaissance which was a movement of African American artists in the 1920s who wanted to celebrate their culture and life in a unique way. He lived between the years 1902 up to the year 1967 and was a leader in the movement. As a poet, he often addressed his audience and addressed issues that were of concern or connected to the African American communities. In this particular poem, Langston brings out and emphasizes life despite the challenges that we face in our daily lives. It is important to note that African Americans at that time went through several challenges that would have made many people want to lose hope in life. This poem was meant to restore hope in the people who may have lost hope in life. This poem is a masterpiece and is considered one of the most famous works by Langston because it addressed the fundamental issues that not only the African Americans faced and still face but also issues that all humanity faces in their daily lives (Critical Essays, 2010). The poem is a perfect illustration that despite the challenges that we face as humanity, Alhadrami1 death is not the solution to these challenges that we face. At the end of the day, he urges us to love life and that life is fine. Work cited Bibliography Critical Essays. (2010). Poetry Analysis- Life is Fine by Langston Hughes. Introduction
This is one of the most notable poems written by Langton Hughes. The poet is also a

an attempt to end his life but which later make him want to live more. The plot is about a lover
who contemplates committing suicide after his beloved lover deceives him. After trying to kill
himself twice, he changes his mind and becomes more optimistic about living again. He reflects
about his actions and realizes that there is still a lot of good reasons to live for; life is always
good. The lines "So since I'm still here living', I guess I'll live on" are an excellent example of the
decision to stop the thoughts of killing himself and live. This is a very well written poem about a

Analysis of the Poem
The poem describes a depressed character who is on the verge of committing suicide but
somehow realizes the importance of living and leaving a mark on the world thus he makes up his
mind to continue living and enjoy the good things that life has to offer. The main character in
this poem is Langton, while the author uses the first person point of view to pass out the thematic

ideas to the audience. Langton is committed to dying; however, every time he is about to commit
suicide, he manages to come up with a reason not to die (Hughes). These reasons give the poem
a sarcastic edge as the ideas are the exact causes of death if applied. When the character says that
the building which he wants to jump from is too tall, or the water he wants to drown is too cold,
then it means that the options tha...
