Teratogens are materials, substances, or other agents that negatively influence the
development of the embryo resulting in congenital abnormalities or birth defects. The



abnormalities associated with these teratogens often arise during the third to the eighth week
during pregnancy when the fetus’s major organs are developing (Lyerly et al., 2009). Some of
the known teratogens include; certain medications, chemicals, infections, or some diseases that
directly affect the development of the embryo.
