DISASTER RECOVERY
Abstract
This paper focuses on why companies need to take seriously matters dealing with the
organization’s disaster recovery and business continuity. It goes further to give to compare
between disaster recovery and business continuity. Both these factors are vital and their
differentiation may greatly aid an organization plan effectively and adequately for any disaster.
Disaster recovery and business continuity are among the most unpleasant and difficult tasks of
business planning. However, they also present a greater payback in an organization.
Unfortunately, numerous businessmen and Information Technology professionals tend to
perceive business continuity and disaster recovery planning as a black hole. This is because these
two processes are deemed as futuristic and there is a greater probability of the events not
occurring. Contrary to this thought, both processes are very important as they ensure that a
company or organization is fully prepared for both the unforeseeable and seeable future, hence
resulting in a smooth operation of a company or an organization.

DISASTER RECOVERY AND BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLAN
Business Continuity (BC) and Disaster Recovery (DR) plan may be used interchangeably,
but in real sense they are quite different. This is because a disaster recovery is considered to be a
reactive measure while a business continuity plan is deemed to be a pro-active measure. A
structured approach with adequate stipulations for responding to the unexpected events is
referred to as a disaster recovery plan (Beaver, n.d.). While a business continuity plan is defined
as a plan to aid ensure an organizations procedure can resume in time of an emergency ("What is
a Business Continuity Plan (BCP)? - Definition from Techopedia", n.d.). With disaster recovery,
the plan takes action whenever anything goes south. However, there is a possibility of IT systems
being offline for an unprecedented period. As for business continuity, an organization has
structures in place in the event of a failure and allows key structures to stay up and be operational
(Beaver, n.d.).
Disaster Recovery Team
Coming up with an operations team is an important step in a company’s disaster
contingency plan. Currently there are standards, developed by the British Standard Institute and
the International Organization for Standardization, for disaster recovery planning that states the
main members of a disaster recovery team. The team should include senior members of the
management, staff specialist in charge of facilities management, members of the information
systems and telecommunications, public relations and human resource officers as well as
representatives of different departments.
Members of the management team are the most important in the operation team. This is
because they are mandated to coordinate and monitor the recovery process, being in touch with
other team members as well as prioritizing activities for the specialist members. Different phases

of an incident management require different reactions from the operations team. In the initial
phase, the team must work together with emergency services to take control of the situation. In
addition, the team needs to be strategic in its decision making so that the organization may
manage to recover.
