Introduction
The United States law defines an elderly as any individual who has attained the
chronological age of 65. Elderly people make up to 15% of the United States population
(American Society on Ageing, 2019). The number is expected to rise over the next few years due
to the decrease in both fertility and mortality rates. The elderly stage is considered as the last
stage in life and is characterized by the beginning of senescence. Senescence leads to the
deterioration of an individual’s physical ability e.g. diminished sense of sight and hearing. It may
also cause deterioration of mental ability including memory loss. Due to reduced immunity,
elderly persons are more prone to diseases. These diminished abilities make elders vulnerable to
abuse (Yadollah Abolfathi Momtaz, 2013).
According to World Health Organization, elder abuse is “a single, or repeated act, or lack
