Help me solve this algebraic word problem

total points = 52

total ribbons = 24

1st place ribbons = 6

1st place points = 30

let the no. of second place ribbons be x.

so points = 3x

and the no. of third place ribbons = (24 - 5- x) = (19-x)

so  points = (19-x)

now total points = 30 + 3x + (19-x) = 53

on solving we get x= 2

so the no. of 3rd [lace ribbons were 19- 2 = 17

I still don't get how to find the amount third place ribbons. Could you please explain this more?

the no of third place  ribbons are : ( 24 - 5 - x)

and each ribbon gas one point so the no.of points =  (19-x)

on putting this in the equation: 30 + 3x + (19-x) = 53

so x = 2

So the no of third place ribbons = 17

Wouldn't it be 18-x because 24 ribbons minus the 6 first place ribbons would be 18. Also, wouldn't it be 52 total because there were only 52 points?

oh sorry . yes it will be 18 -x

so  points = (18-x)

now total points = 30 + 3x + (18-x) = 52

on solving we get x= 2
