suppose we number the multiple-choice question 1, 2, 3 and 4. If the three possible answers  are labeled A, B, and C, the  different responses are: 

1A or 1B or 1C  for the first question;

2A or 2B or 2C for the second question

and 3A or3B or 3C for the third question

and 4A or 4B or 4C for the fourth question

This makes 12 possible different answers altogether

*The easy way is to multiply 4 (the number of questions by 3 (the number of answers)

4 x 3 = 12
