“We Real Cool” by Gwendolyn Brooks, 1917 - 2000

  • How do these poetic devices contribute to the development of the poem’s message?
Oct 5th, 2015

Thank you for the opportunity to help you with your question!

Literary devices used in the poem and development of poem:

1.

There is epistrophe: the repetition of we – not for emphasis but rather to put the emphasis on the actions done by the group: playing hooky, drinking, gambling.

2. alliteration: You also have alliteration (sing sin) giving a simple sing-song quality to the poem.

3. The use of simple language that the actions of the group are natural, even logical., almost like an enthymeme, which is an informally stated syllogism.  A syllogism would be something like this:

Living is a struggle.

All humans live.

All humans struggle.

“So why not enjoy yourself while you can,” is the message.
