Introduction

Human performance and productivity are the key drivers of any successful
business. These two factors greatly determine how efficient a business is towards achieving
its objectives. A business must ensure that all its employees are performing as expected and
yielding the productivity levels expected of them. This must be sustained at a consistent level
and therefore a continuous process must be put in place to monitor performance. There are
various determinants of how employees perform; personal or environmental factors. Line
managers must develop performance enhancement concepts to monitor and address any
factors that may reduce employee performance (Fleishman & Howell, 1982).

Some of the factors that could hamper performance include clarity of objectives. The
people involved must be aware of the general and specific objectives set out by the
organization. They must align themselves to the targets set. If this is not the case, it’s hard to
assess the progress of on-going work. This calls for adequate planning and organization of
the work-flows (Fleishman & Howell, 1982). Similarly, the employees must have complete
knowledge of the structures and how to go about handling a situation. This goes deep into the
skills of the individual. The employees must be well trained and equipped with the technical
and professional know-how required to do the job.

Another drawback to employee performance is the lack of feedback. There is a great
need to periodically evaluate the performance or outcome of a job. This calls for comparing
intended results against the actual results. The evaluation process helps to reveal the progress

achieved, any deviations recorded and measures to counter or correct the deviations in order
to keep advancing towards the set objectives. Evaluation acts like a guide to success.

Motivation is also another key determinant of human performance and productivity.
Employees might be capable of doing a certain task, but the results depend on their
willingness and push to do it. It’s important to understand what drives a person to do
something in order to be able to influence it. Employees could be motivated by incentives,
personal satisfaction, and career growth among other things. Performance and motivation are
directly related. A decrease in productivity could signal a less motivated workforce. The
work environment plays a key role in employee productivity and performance. The working
conditions must be suitable and free of any barriers. The work tools and equipment must be
in good condition and not risky to use. Also, there must be clear leadership structures to avoid
competing loyalties and priorities as well as an environment that allows employees to express
themselves. All these factors are essential in ensuring consistent efficiency and high
productivity of employees (Heizer & Render, 2005).

Customer satisfaction

Customer satisfaction refers to the extent to which a product or service is able to meet
and exceed the expectations or goals of a given market or customer. It is a key indicator of
the performance of an organization. This is important for a business because in a highly
competitive market it is very easy to lose the market to the competition if customer
satisfaction is low. Customer satisfaction is, therefore, an important aspect of business
strategy (Fleishman & Howell, 1982).

Most businesses engage in data collection from customers in order to get an indicator
