a room with a w, length L, and height h with four walls needs to be painted.

a. write a formula for the area that needs to be painted not accounting for doors or windows.

b. rewrite the formula to find h in terms of A, l, and w.

c. if L is 18 ft, w is 14 ft, A IS 512 ft, what is the height of the room?

d. reasoning: suppose L is equal to w. write a formula for A in terms of w and h.

a. To determine the area that needs to be painted, we need to figure out the area of the 4 walls and the ceiling (assuming the floor isn't being painted). The area 2 of the walls will be L * H and the area of the other two walls will be W * H.  Adding those all together will result in the final surface area 

A = 2 * L * H + 2 * W * H

b.  To find H in terms of the other variables, first factor out H, then put the non H terms on the other side, then divide both sides by everything H is multiplied by.

A = H (2L + 2W)

A / (2L + 2W) = H

c.  H = 512 / (2*18 + 2*14) = 8 ft

d.  If L = W, just substitute a W in for every L in the area equation

A = H (2W + 2W)

A = 4WH
