One wonderful poem by Walt Whitman is To You. The poem consists of just one stanza
that comprises of two lines. The poem speaks to an unknown person in the first person
perspective. No details are revealed of the unknown person but the author poses a question to
him/her. The question is rhetoric as it enquires why two unknown people cannot speak to each
One aspect of the poem that I find interesting is its title, To You. This name is a clear
indication that Whitman directs this poem to the reader. Whitman does not employ use of any
rhyme or meter in his poem as he provides answers to the questions he poses to the reader. A
mellow, sorrowful tone is evident in the poem as he expresses the fact a lot of challenges may
happen in life due to either social constraints or just human behavior. The poem has simple and
direct meaning and diction hence making it a very interesting piece.
