A. How did medieval Universities differ from universities today?
Universities began in Twelfth Century AD and have undergone significant changes to
what is currently termed as “modern universities.” Some things have changed, and others
remained throughout the centuries. In medieval times, some of these universities included Paris,
which specialized in Theology, Bologna specializing in law, Padua/ Salemo specializing in
medicine, Oxford for mathematics and science, and Montpellier dealing with medicine (Rubin,
2015). Generally, during that era, those who attended the university were the poor and the
middle-class population. Medieval universities, therefore, vary significantly from today’s
universities in that the early universities had limited curriculum specializing in one or two fields
while today, universities have an extensive range course to study including arts, sciences, and
technical subjects. The funding approach also varies between the two eras. Currently, a
significant percentage of universities have collaborated with the government and as a result, are
