Many business enterprises have integrated information technology (IT) systems with their
operations. These systems can, however, be affected by disasters, derailing their functions, and in
turn, pose the risk of crumbling of business operations. Therefore, in a heavily IT-dependent
business environment, organizations should have effective data backup plans, disaster recovery
plans, and business continuity plans, and incorporate all the critical elements associated with
them to facilitate quick recovery and normalization of operations in the event of an IT disaster.
Data Backup Planning
Data backup planning ensures that all critical data or functioning of an enterprise is
present in a secondary location and can be accessed when a need arises. A good data backup
planning is characterized by the security of data, the frequency of backup, and reliability of the
storage.
A good backup planning should have multiple copies of data files in different locations.
The primary location for data storage is an on-site location within the firm but stored in separate
devices other than the main computers used to run the business (Sengupta & Annervaz, 2014). In
addition, this should also be in a different network from other primary devices for business
operations, to protect the data from damage in case of a malware attack or intentional intrusion.
The second storage location should be an off-site location away from the firm, either by a
different firm specializing in data backups or in the cloud (Sengupta & Annervaz, 2014).
