RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CYBERBULLYING AND TECHNOLOGY

Introduction
Communication and technology has made it easier than it was in the past for the younger
generation to stay in touch and communicate with each other. With this comes the dark side of
cyberbullying which has become rampant, and cases have increased tremendously in the recent
past. Bauman (2015) tells us that cyberbullying is the harassment that takes place in the online
platforms of communication and connectivity. This form of harassment in itself can take
different forms and shape depending on the nature of its occurrence. Its legal definition depends
on the geographical location of the victim. This vice relates to technology in the sense that it is
committed via an online platform where the victim and the perpetrator are usually in different
geographical locations, but the medium for their connection is usually communication through
the use of technological devices like smartphones, computers, or online platforms like Facebook
and Skype. This paper aims at discussing the relationship between cyberbullying and technology.
The origin of cyberbullying
The advent of computing has seen the introduction of social issues. Technology has
resulted in a number of shifts in the way society behaves and interacts. A number of the resulting
social issues have positive effects but a large majority of these issues are negative, and have a
negative impact on society. One of these negative issues is that of cyberbullying.
Betts (2016) tells us that, the advent of cheap and relatively affordable computers saw
traditional forms of bullying make its way onto the social web in the early 1990s. Children and
teenagers were subjected to this harassment in public chatrooms and other personal messaging
platforms. The internet’s anonymity gave authority for any web user to intimidate and harass
other users without having to face the legal consequences. Cyberbullying gained its mark in the

internet world when the use of smartphones grew and became common, as teenagers could share
messages and their pictures to other contacts on their mobile phones. To date, various cases of
students and teenagers taking their lives as a result of cyberbullying on various online platforms,
either by their close friends or total strangers have been reported.
The target population of cyberbullying
Apparently, cyberbullying seems to be focusing on a specific group of the young adult
population. From the number of suicide attempts and the ones that were successful, we can
confidently state that a majority of the target group falls under the teenagers. Older teenagers are
more likely to be involved in this form of harassment when compared to younger teenagers, and
both sexes have shown to be equally targeted when it comes to cyberbullying. Most of the
victims of cyberbullying are the ones that to some extent have shown to have related and
unrelated social problems and that seem to have difficulties interacting with their peers both
online and offline. Research has also shown that a smaller percentage of adults have fallen prey
to this harassment and that mostly include high school teachers and principals.
“Between 9-34% of young people say they have been targeted for cyberbullying”
(Prevent Cyberbullying, 2019). Many of the teens who are targeted are very upset or afraid.
Usually the teens that are most upset are the younger ones (10-12 years old). Often these
younger teens receive “creepy” messages or request for their picture. “The average age of a
teenager involved in cyberbullying is 15 years old” (Prevent Cyberbullying, 2019).
Relation of this social change to the discussion
Cyberbullying relates to the discussion where the writer talks of the internet related
forms of bullying. Discussions view this as a social problem that has come along as a result of

the introduction of computers in the emergence of technology. This issue has proven to be a
global issue to the extent that it is discussed in many papers by a lot of writers and authors. This
social behavior has impacted the young population negatively as it tends to lower their selfesteem and ego and often reduces their performance in school as they spend most of their school
and social time dealing with the effects that come as a result of cyberbullying.
Conclusion
There exists a lot of challenges that have resulted as an aftermath of the computer and
technological advancements. Some of these challenges may be rewarding while the rest only
serves to destroy the current social setting. This paper discussed cyberbullying and its effects as
one of these negative social changes.

IDS 403 Module Four Narrated Slide Guidelines and Rubric
Digital Identity
Overview: The final project for this course is a multimedia presentation in which you will devise a plan of action for addressing a local or global technology issue
of your choice. To prepare you for the experience, you will be asked to complete a series of shorter “narrated slides.” These are intended to be more informal,
but they are still important to your overall success because they allow you to practice both your analysis skills and your oral presentation skills. In this activity,
you will create a short PowerPoint presentation with an oral narration and visual components using the PowerPoint narration tool. This will allow you and your
instructor to check that your technology works for this project, and to troubleshoot any potential difficulties before the project is due. This activity must be
submitted in PPTX format for your professor to give you feedback on whether your technical components are correct.
Prompt: In this second narrated slide assignment, you will explore digital identity. For your analysis, you can choose to explore your various online and
technology-related behaviors and preferences, or you can choose to examine the issue you explored in Module Three from the perspective of digital identity.
Then, in a couple of PowerPoint slides, record your answers to the following:
Analyze your digital identity.
o How is your digital identity different from your real-world self? How is it the same?
o How does technology enable you to more fully express a specific dimension of your identity?
o How does your digital identity affect your sense of who you are as a person?
Describe the behaviors associated with your digital identity.
o How does technology govern, influence, or shape your identity?
o How is your behavior different when you know it is public?
PowerPoint: Throughout your short PowerPoint presentation, make sure you use effective multimedia and communication skills:
Include a combination of text, visuals, and sound elements that logically flow with your presentation.
Construct your presentation in a way that ensures the audio and visuals elements are logically organized in order to convey your message to your
audience.
Make sure you provide appropriate supporting evidence in your presentation. Evidence could consist of your textbook, additional resources, company
websites, and so on. Include your references in APA or MLA format in an additional slide at the end of your presentation.
NOTE: A headset or external microphone is recommended for better results when recording the oral component of your presentation. However, you can also
use the incorporated microphone on your computer or cell phone. Use the Check file compatibility with earlier versions and Are you having video or audio
playback issues? resources from Microsoft to help you check compatibility between versions of Office.
Rubric
Guidelines for Submission: Your presentation should be 2 to 4 slides and no longer than 4 minutes in length. You are required to include a combination of text,
visuals, and audio narration in order to support your work. Speaker notes are not required. Include any sources cited in APA or MLA format. If you require
alternative accommodations for completing this assignment, reach out to your instructor directly for more information.

Role of Technology in Society
Technology is the best thing that has ever happened in the world, but again, it is the worst
thing to happen in the world as well. Prior to the introduction of technology, everything was
peaceful and simple, people could even engage each other through face to face contact. Though
technology was not yet embraced, people could still get their tasks done. Following the absence
of technology, people maintained healthier lifestyles. Nevertheless, after the introduction of
technology, people have found it difficult to live without it. Technology has changed our
communication styles, behavior patterns, and also, how we manage our daily activities (Rahimi,
2017). While people feel that technology has been detrimental to them, they should learn that it
has served them with potential benefits as well. For instance, it has made them connect from one
area to another with fewer constraints. The impact of technology can be felt by looking at how it
has impacted some aspects like identity, relationships, gender, and social class. This assignment
presents the impact of technology in society based on relationships.
How have the Social Practices and Technology changed the Current Daily Operations?
Technology has always been a proper way of communicating with our loved ones.
Nevertheless, it can as well jeopardize our relationships. This implies that technology can affect
our relationships based on how one partner in the relationship may employ technology towards
or against the other partner. To put it clearly, a couple who lived conjointly for some time and
later broke up, may facilitate cyberbullying. In particular, the husband may share sensitive
information about his wife after the break up over the internet with the intent of harming her
emotionally (Rahimi, 2017). Technology has also impacted social practices, specifically, on
relationships where teenagers now engag in online dating where they can date through
WhatsApp and Facebook. Technology has also been helpful in the sense that is has necessitated

social networking. For example, presently, people have relied on technology to explore the
internet and connect with their prospective employers on social networks like LinkedIn
Technology as a Force for Societal Change
The predominance of computer technology happened in the 1990s not only in America
but across the world. Consequently, this has changed how, as well as where people work. Unlike
previously, when people had to physically appear in the offices for work, currently, people are
able to work virtually while at home without accessing the office. This happens by connecting
their work with their offices through electronic networking devices like mobile phones,
computers, as well as emails. Certainly, telecommunication enables the employees from various
regions to work for an organization based in another region without accessing the organization
physically (Duncombe & Reus-Smit, 2019). This employment form has been helpful,
particularly, to the people living with disabilities because they always experience constraints
when leaving their homes for their offices. Besides, it has been meaningful for mothers with
young children in a sense, that it has allowed them to work while looking after their children, and
at the same time, manage the domestic chores. To this end, it would be necessary to suggest that
technology has been a force that has been driving societal change.
How has the Emerging Technologies led to Societal Issues?
While technology has impacted society positively, it draws various concerns in society.
First, relying on technology heavily poses a threat to privacy and security. Accessing some
websites have jeopardized the privacy of individuals in the sense that they have had their private
information retrieved and been spied on. Secondly, the introduction of computer games
following the emergence of technology has made school children along with adolescents
embrace the behaviors perpetrated by these games. For instance, some games are characterized
4
ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY IN SOCIETY
with dangerous scenes and some school children have practiced these behaviors in their real life
where they have been involved in attacking people to show their aggression (Waight & Abd-ElKhalick, 2018). Thirdly, TVs have some programs that do not offer parental guidelines while
they display adult content. Such programs may display sexual content, and this may challenge
the children to engage in early sexual acts that will, in the end, result in early pregnancies.
Impact of Technology on a Social Science Student
As a social science student, technology has been impactful to my fellow classmates, the
same way it has impacted society. As compared to the past, currently, we rely on the internet to
facilitate learning. We are always encouraged to draw meaningful information from online
learning resources such as databases to complete our assignments. While searching for
information over the internet, many classmates would admit that there is the temptation to
navigate various social media sites to update themselves with world trends (Waight & Abd-ElKhalick, 2018). Certainly, this student has become obsessed with the laptop as well as the
cellphone to the extent that both pieces of technology have become dormant in engaging peers.
Unlike previously, where people had to meet face to face for them to date, she admits that she
dates online and she even made it clear, that she is dating a man from the United Kingdom while
she is living in the United States.
Conclusion
Unlike the time when life was peaceful and simple, technology has brought various
changes in the world that makes it intricate. The changes in society are evident beginning with
relationships, identity, through social class. People have become dependent on technology to
such an extent, that it is difficult for them to live without relying on it (Duncombe & Reus-Smit,
2019). While technology may impact society positively, it is always associated with adverse
ROLE OF TECHNOLOGY IN SOCIETY
effects. This challenges people to learn how to use technology properly, because engaging in
some acts such as cyberbullying may leave one being harmed emotionally as well as
psychologically.
