Question a

The type of manufacturing process that is required determines the type of basic layout to
use. The manufacturing process can be continuous or intermittent. For a continuous
manufacturing process, the product layout is used. This layout is also known as assembly lines
because it arranges activities in a sequence that needs to be followed to produce a certain product
(Heizer, Render and Munson, 2016). The process in this layout can be arranged in a straight line
while the straight line is subdivided to ensure proper and smooth utilization of labour and
equipment. The efficiency of the product layout is dependent on line balancing.
This means that work stations need to have almost equal time requirements as this will
reduce the idleness in some workstations as they wait for parts in the upstream process. The
product layout is advantageous because it can produce large volumes of products. Low costs
characterize the layout because of the high volume production that means the process can take
advantage of economies of scale (Heizer, Render and Munson, 2016). The costs are also pulled
