Course  Project   Effective Presentations COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Explain the fundamentals of effective communication 2. Identify appropriate methods of communication 3. Demonstrate effective presentation skills BACKGROUND INFORMATION For your final project, you will use the communication skills you’ve developed in this course to write and deliver a speech with an accompanying video/slideshow presentation. When creating your project, you’ll need to keep in mind audience, purpose, and structure. In addition, you will need to consider the ethical guidelines of public speaking by accurately citing and representing your sources. PROJECT INSTRUCTIONS Presentation Topics Choose one of the following prompts to respond to for your project. 1. Your company is looking at changing its email provider. Your boss has asked you to investigate and report back on the two major servers: Gmail and Outlook What are the pros and cons? What does your boss need to know in order to make this decision? 2. Your company is considering expanding its marketing efforts. You’ve been asked to make a presentation to the marketing department about whether “social media marketing” might work for you. What is “social media marketing”? How does it work? How and where has it been most successful? What recommendations would you make to your company’s marketing department about viable “social media marketing” promotions? 3. You want to propose to your boss that he let you telecommute from home a few days a week. What information do you need him to know? What information will convince him? How will you working from home benefit the company? © 2016. Any unauthorized reproduction or distribution of this material is prohibited without expressed written permission. Students are expected to maintain the integrity of the assignment by refraining from reproducing or posting the assignment or their completed work where it can be viewed by current or future students. Course  Project   Effective Presentations Project Components Complete the following steps to create your project. All components need to be submitted for your project to be graded. Submit the following components for grading: 1. Research/Annotated Bibliography 2. Speech Outline 3. Presentation Slide Deck (e.g.PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi, etc.) 4. Video or audio recording of the speech. (If you are only recording audio, it needs to be created to follow along with the slide deck). Create Presentation Materials 1. Research/Annotated Bibliography • Once you have chosen the topic you would like to present, the next step is to research the argument or topic being discussed. Please submit notes in a word document about where you researched and what you found. Research should be from credible sources. • In addition to completing research on the topic, it is important that the resources used are cited appropriately using APA formatting in your presentation and your speech (refer to Unit 6), as discussed in the course. • Please include an annotated bibliography with your presentation. This should be included as a separate word document. 2. Speech Outline • First, determine which method of organization you are going to use in your speech and presentation (i.e. categorical, spatial, compare/contrast, chronological, biographical, causal, etc.). This organization method will also help you determine the approach you take when recording your presentation. • Second, determine the main points of your presentation and create an outline that highlights these main points. © 2016. Any unauthorized reproduction or distribution of this material is prohibited without expressed written permission. Students are expected to maintain the integrity of the assignment by refraining from reproducing or posting the assignment or their completed work where it can be viewed by current or future students. Course  Project   Effective Presentations • The outline should include notes about your introduction, body, and conclusion of your speech. It should also serve as an outline for the presentation serving as a visual aid. • Remember to consider your audience when determining your approach and strategies. 3. Create the Presentation Slide Deck (Power Point, Google Slides, Prezi, etc.) • The slide deck should highlight the main points of your speech. Feel free to use Prezi, PowerPoint, Google Slides, Keynote, or any other presentation software you feel comfortable with. • The slide deck should serve as a visual aid for your speech and help enhance your topics and ideas. • Consider how a visual aid can improve audience understanding, clarify the message, and emphasize your main points. Presentation Delivery 4. Audience • Your presentation should be appropriate to the needs of your audience. What do you think the audience is asking for? • What tone is appropriate for your audience and the context in which the presentation would be delivered? What other tactics could be beneficial in making your point? 5. Video Recording • Record your presentation, as you would if you were giving the presentation to the audience of your chosen topic. Then upload the video to any media-sharing platform (e.g. YouTube, Vimeo, etc.). • Imagine that the camera is your target audience and give your presentation just as you would in the context as described in your chosen prompt. • Your total presentation should be five to seven-minutes in length. © 2016. The following website maintains a list of video hosting sites: http://www.videohostings.com. In the written materials that you submit as part of the assignment, you should include the title of the video and a link for the evaluator to use to grade your submission. Please make sure that the privacy settings on your video are set to allow third parties to view it. If privacy issues are a concern, consider using www.vimeo.com, where your files can be shared with others through uses of passwords and private links. If you are still concerned about privacy, you can always remove the video from the site after it has been graded. 3. When you are ready, click on the Upload Files button in the Project tab of your course to submit your assignment. Your project should be graded within 7 days. Please contact your instructor if this is not the case. You will need to upload four files to submit your project: 1. Research © 2016. Research- Social Media Marketing
Social media marketing is a common phenomenon today; many companies that have set
out to create an impression on customers have used social media in their marketing. The
marketing department of this company can benefit from this tool, and many top brands have used
this tool and realized great success. The purpose of this research is to describe social media
marketing and the benefits that it has on any marketing department in increasing sales and brand
awareness among customers. Social Media Marketing also is known as SMM and is the active
creation and sharing of content that belongs to a company on social media. The purpose of
sharing such content on the internet and social media is to create awareness of the brand and
create a lasting impression in customers and also improve customer engagement. SMM works in
three ways: it attracts the customers, engages the same customers and eventually converts the
individual into an active and loyal customer.
SMM can work for a company when there is effective communication. One of the critical
aspects that go into effective communication that are related to social media marketing is the
giving of feedback (Wilson, Guinan, Parise, & Weinberg, 2011). Many customers who are
engaged or read the content of a company on social media give their comments and expect
feedback from the same company. Therefore, as the company engages the customer through
social media and offering the correct and specific feedback, they create an impression on the
customers. According to Ashley and Tuten (2015), companies like Proctor and Gamble have
successfully used this tool to create a lasting impact on their customers as well as other social
media users. The company has been known to use stories of how mothers have been nursing and
nurturing athletes in marketing their products. The stories have been shared on social media to
increase communication between customers and the company on social media. Additionally,

Dell Company has been known to use and succeed in using SMM as a marketing tool for its
products. They have been focusing on continuity of communication and company-customer
relationship in meeting the social needs of their customers. Guinness, on the other hand, has been
using social media sites like Facebook to drive their customer and user attendance to their events.
SMM has many benefits, and in the communication between the customer and the
company, it has helped companies achieve their short and long term goals. I would make the
following recommendations to the company I work for regarding the use of SMM. They should
select the right social media site that has the highest number of users who might be interested in
the company’s product. The best site and company will be Facebook which has the broadest
coverage and many users with numerous features (Hallock, Roggeveen, & Crittenden, 2019).
They must select the right message that will create attraction to the customer, allow the customer
to linger longer for engagement and eventually covert the prospective customer to the real or
active customer (Martin & Todorov, 2010). They should also select the right content for their
social media that is creative and engaging to the customer.
